Hartbeespoort Dam: the Hartbeespoort Dam Area

Visit the Irene Dairy Farm for a farm style breakfast or five litre ...The Hartbeespoort Dam is situated in the North-West Province of South Africa. It lies in the valley to the south of the Magaliesberg Mountain Range and north of the Witwatersberg Mountain Range. The Dam is about 35 kilometers west of Pretoria. The name of the Dam means ” pass of the hartbees” (a type of an antelope) in Afrikaans. The Dam was designed for irrigation which is currently its primary use.

The town Hartbeespoort is situated close to the Dam wall and the villages Kosmos, Melody, Ifafi and Meerhof can be found close to its banks. The town was previously known as Schoemansville which was named after General Hendrik Schoeman (1840-1901). The original dam was built on the farm Hartebeespoort and ajacent land was acquired by the State in 1925, to complete the Dam.

The Harbeespoort Dam is a popular holiday and weekend resort for Johannesburg and Pretoria and is the principle water recreational area for Northern Gauteng.
