My sister’s youngest daughter, who also happens to be my goddaughter, is very into all things Sailor Moon, the Japanese illustrated serial. When her birthday was approaching, my sister and her husband had agreed they would buy my niece her first smartphone and I was tasked with a finding a sailor moon luna phone case. Luna, an adorable black cat in the series, was my niece’s favorite and even I had to admit that the cat was adorable.
Along with the phone case, I had plans of my own for a gift, but it took some convincing to get my sister and brother-in-law to allow me to find a kitten to present to my niece as well. After several weeks of convincing them that a cat would be a great addition to their household and my niece was well old enough to handle the care of it, I began the search for the perfect black kitten with a little white crescent moon marking on its face to give to her.
I visited shelter after shelter and must have looked at 100 different black kittens, but finding one with the marking on its face as the Luna character had was proving to be next to impossible. I knew my niece would be happy with any kitten, but I wanted it to be perfect. Finally, three days before the party, I located a tiny kitten, the runt of his litter, with a smidgen of white on the top of his head. It may not have been a crescent shape, but it was very close. I purchased all of the needed accessories including a pretty pink collar, leash, cat bed, litter box and carrier.
To say my niece was thrilled would have been an understatement. She named the kitten Luna, as we all expected, and took hundreds of photos of him using her new phone.
